Jack Russells are a very lively breed. Be firm, be patient! From your door knob, hang a bell from a string. The dog will associate the bell's sound with "outside."

Reward compliance with commands ('sit' etc) with instant verbal praise and food rewards. Work in short (10 min) sessions several times daily. NEVER punish; make training equal FUN.

Training is something that depends on each individual dog. Most Jack Russell's are full of energy and if not exercised properly will destroy and cause trouble. A good way to train is to either do reward training where they get a reward for the wanted behavior. I also recommend dog training classes.

It is important to be consistent with a Jack Russell, and begin training as soon as they enter your home. Positively reinforcing good behaviors, while ignoring bad behaviors, tends to have the best result.

The best way to train a Jack Russell is to use positive reinforcement. Always acknowledge good behavior with verbal praise. In addition, you can offer treats for specific actions. You do need to establish that you are in charge, but do so with positive, friendly approach.
