How do you tell if he's just playing it cool or if he really isn't into you?

Genuine interest will be shown. If someone is overtly nice and does things they would not usually do then you can say that he is into you.

Observe how he acts and compare his treatment of you to his overall conduct. If he's generally reserved, he may actually like you.

If he is really into you, you know. He will be tripping over himself to get to you. If he is not, and trying to play 'cool', something else is up with him. Of course, maybe he is just shy... If you really want to know, Ask him out!
