Begin at a corner of the roof that is on the opposite side from where the ladder is placed. Spread the tar onto the roof and smooth the material down using a roller. Thoroughly repeat this process until all parts of the roof are covered. The tar will not finish sealing unless the temperature is seventy degrees or higher.

It is important to apply tar to a roof starting at the farthest point and working backward from there to the point of escape, whether through a window or down a ladder. Choose a day that is dry and between 50 and 85 degrees F. Paint the tar, moving backwards and taking the tar bucket with you.
