Use a washable marker to mark button placement. Knot the end of your thread, then come up through the back of the fabric, then the button. Sew down until secure.
Thread a needle knotting one end. From the inside of the shirt, sew first the shirt and one hole in the button, then back through the other hole. Repeat.
