Unless you have a heavy duty sewing machine, I would leave this to the experts. Usually a shoe repair person know how to do this. They have the heavy or commercial machine that can handle this job. I hope the tear is on the seam otherwise you will need to creative.

If the tear is in the body of the leather seek the help of a professional seamstress who has experience with leather. If the tear is on a seam try using a carpet needle, and carpet thread and sew through the holes left where the thread used to be. Be prepared to have sore hands if you do it yourself.

With an available sewing machine, repair your coat using a leather needle and polyester thread. To avoid perforating your leather, use double sided tape to hold pieces together and long stitch widths instead of short ones. If your sewing machine skips a stitch just mend the skipped stitches by hand.

To sew leather, you will need a special needle for your sewing machine. Leather is a thicker material and needs a special needle in order to get through the layers of fabric. If you do not have the proper needle, the needle will continuously break when you try to use it.
