Do you have the right tools for the job? Just check with a tech about what you need before you start hunting around and dismantling the thermostat housing. It'll be nasty if you take it out and can't put it back together in your Rav4!

Trace the top radiator return hose and you will find the thermostat housing. There will be a few bolts that bolt it to the engine midsection. You can they go about removing and opening it and replacing it when needed.

Just a tip - make sure you have the gasket or gasket maker ready. I prefer a gasket as sometimes the gasket maker gets pretty stuck and makes it difficult to remove the next time around. Or alternately use the gasket with a thin layer of gasket maker for leakproofing.  add a comment

Once you have located the housing and removed the attached hose than all you need to do is remove the three nuts holding the top on. These should be 10mm and a socket and an extension make the job a lot easier. Replace the thermostat and reverse the whole procedure.
