Most of the kits have good instructions on them. Just be sure to get a kit for VW Jetta air conditioning and make sure it works for your model and year. The kits usually have a can of refrigerant and a refill hose that connects to the Low Pressure Side.

First you need to find out if your air conditioning in the VW Jetta is R134 compatible. If your low pressure side valve is a screw on then it is an R12 and you will have to have it retrofitted. If it is R134 compatible get a leak detection kit.

Bring it to a shop. You need to evacuate the system using a machine and then it will fill the system is r 134-a which is the refrigerant used today rather than freon. It will probly be around 100 dollars to get this done but it is the safest and easiest way.

You must have a gauge and a refrigerant recovery system. Test the Air Conditioning for leaks, it must be seal before recharging. On the engine and set the air to the coldest phase. Accelerate to the MAX. Use the gauge to check pressure.

It would be best if you took your Jetta to a mechanic since special tools are needed to remove any freon that might still be there. Most states require someone who is licensed to do that. It isn't really expensive to add more so you have it done then.

Open the front hood and look for a canister right below the intake manifold. The canister has a tubing connector to it which are to be connected to the gas for air conditioning.

Places like NAPA, Autozone, Advanced Auto and other shops sell A/C recharging kits. Buy one and then simply follow the directions included in the kit. It's pretty easy.
