How do you qualify for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families?

I've heard that TANF can help me out.

Must provide proof of children you have, proof of citizenship and proof of income. Contact your local welfare office. Caseworker will review your claim and eligibility will be decided.

To qualify for benefits, you must show extreme need, usally, provide an eviction notice, utilities shutoff notice, etc. Food benefits are the easiest to receive, usually takes a few days.

TANF is a form of temporary welfare. You must have income below the poverty line and children under 18 years old whom you support. You cannot be receiving Social Security Disability or have assets over $3000.

Answer by  Dean (4035)

The application for TANF includes a review of the family's circumstances, including rent, utilities, income of the adults, how many in the household and other relevant bits of information. Each case is evaluated based on set standards and perimeters. The assistance is then awarded accordingly. The caseworker can explain in greater detail.

It is a federal program administered by Health & Human Services in each state. Eligibility depends on family size and income.
