You could start by sealing or priming the wood, thenapply agood paint or stain and clear coat,or you could have the beam wrapped with a mateal and silicone around the metal to help keep water from getting behindit.

Typically you'd choose a wood that has been treated prior to placing it outside. However, if you would like to keep your wood safe even after it's pretreated, there are epoxy's you can buy to put on the wood that will protect it from weather and bugs. You can also apply a water repellent.

First apply anti-termite then apply primer over the wooden piece and finally paint it with the paint matching to your home. Do not apply polish over the wood because it does not protects wood as much as the paint do,and always keep a look over the wooden stuff that are exposed to the environment from time to time!
