Glass is made from heating silica to a high temperature, past the glass transition, and then cooling quickly to maintain the glass structure. Sand is mainly made up of silica which is why it is commonly believed that sand is used to make glass.

At its most basic glass is made by melting sand and allowing it to cool very slowly. this requires very high temps. you can also add other metals to give the glass a different color.
