A shadow box is basically a deep picture frame. Instead of just inserting a photo or picture behind the glass, there is room for thicker items such as trinkets, souvenirs, small rocks, etc. You can buy shadow boxes at craft stores in various sizes.

Buy a cheap picture frame the size of the shadow box. The glass will be used for the box. Next get a long pine piece 1x4. Cut in into four pieces and nail the four pieces together. Glue the glass to the frame and put a trim over the glass.
