How do you make a model in a bottle?

I may be completely wrong, but can't one construct them outside the bottle, but make them collapseable? Then one can push it inside and set it upright by pulling on an attached string. Like I said, I may be way off base with this theory, but it seems viable.

The way to make a model in a bottle is to buy a model kit that is specially designed to be a model in a bottle with exact instructions.

No. While that may seem like the more logical route, you actually start with a bottle, and using tongs or something similar piece by piece construct the model inside the bottle. It's very challenging and time consuming, and certainly not for everyone.
