How do you know if the EGR valve on a Mercedes is faulty?

To know for sure have a mechanic look at it. Typically when the egr goes bad you car will not run right. This can lead to stalling or stuttering.

At first, I noticed an unusual odor, shortly thereafter, my engine started to cut out, causing a jerking motion. I had filled my tank with gas earlier, so I knew that wasn't causing my problem.
