How do you know if people are trustworthy for landscaping jobs?

I have heard horror stories about landscapers breaking into homes or hurting family members.

The way in which I usually verify if potential landscapers are trustworthy is by examining the work that they've done (and do) for my neighbors. I live in a pretty well kept neighborhood, with a host of gardeners and yard men, so it was relatively easy to find reliable landscaping help, that could be vouched for by satisfied employers.

Never hire anyone unless you have checked their credentials. Use a well known company that has references, are found to be trustworthy and can provide proof that they are legitimate.

Trustworthy landscapers can be found by word of mouth. Also call the landscaper, request references of homeowners they have done in the past.

I would ask for references from their customers. You local BBB might know if there are complaints about them. Don't ask for trouble and be there when they are there.
