How do you know if a value is a solution for an inequality?

I need to determine if a value is a solution to an inequality.

Take the value that is given and put it into the inequality. Simplify to get a single number on both sides of the inequality. If the result is true (ex. 3<5), then it is a solution. If the result is false (ex: 1>5), then it is not a solution.
