Fossil sharks teeth are trangular, usually black with some grey or tan possible at the top. They are common on some beaches; in Florida they sell post cards identifying the type of tooth. Your library should have a book with pictures so you can be sure.

Fossilized shark teeth are often found along the beach, and they can be identified in part by looking for a black root with a gray-colored crown.

A fossil contains the original tooth and will look the same as an unfossilised tooth. Obtain a nonfossil tooth. Your fossil will have exactly the same anatomy only it will also be stone. Pebbles that have the same general shape as a shark tooth may be fossils, look for a stone with tooth anatomy.
