To identify a Tarantula, you will first take note of its very large size. They are by far the largest spiders in the southern USA and into central America. You will also notice they are terrestrial and very heavy bodied. Don't be alarmed, they aren't dangerous to humans.

The tarantula is hairy and large member of the spider family. There are about 900 species within this group. There have 8 legs, like other spiders, and are invertebrates. They can be up to 4 inches long with a leg span of 12 inches. This would be the largest of the species.

There are about 900 species of tarantulas but one thing they all have in common is that their body and legs are covered in wiry hairs. Usually they are large in size and build nests into the earth with a round entrance hole which is covered with spider web material.

The majority of North American tarantulas are brown - but they can look different if you're camping in another location. If it's a big hairy spider, you're best to just assume it's a tarantula. Specific identification of the spider often involves close examination such as counting leg segments or examining the mouth area. I'd advise against this.

The tarantula most often reported in the United States is brown and will range from 1-4 inches long. Unless allergic to them, if they would bite it's not highly venomous.

A tarantula is quite large. He looks like a gigantic black, hairy spider. When you see him, you will know him!
