How do you housebreak an adult cocker spaniel?

She is a rescue and we just learned that she's not housebroken.

Go about this in the same way you would train a pup. Never punish the animal for doing the wrong thing. Rather, use positive reinforcement, like praise or treats, whenever they toilet outside. Try a routine of regular times to go outside. If you see the dog behaving as if he/she is about to go inside, gently lead them out.

Housebreaking any dog requires close supervision and a regular schedule. The dog must always be in the same room as you. If you can not watch her, she must be in a crate. Do not punish for mistakes in the house, just pick up take outside and praise for finishing there. Two weeks of diligence will save your floors.

I can say that you need to have a good scheduale where you will take her out to walk particular times throughout the day. Make sure you walk her well and five her plenty of opportunities to go. Reward her with a doggie treat when she does.

Buy puppy pads from the store (or newspaper would do) and place them around the house, especially in places the dog pee's in the most. You housebreak an adult dog just as you would a puppy. It may take longer since your dog is an adult but she will learn in time.
