How do you go about figuring spousal support?

Your or your attorney can propose a figure, but the court will make the final determination. There are a number of factors involved, such as accustomed lifestyle, income of both parties, etc.

You don't the presiding judge does. Usually the judge will figure how much of the salary should be given to the other spouse depending on how long they were in the marraige. Also if the other spouse does not work they have to be taken care of.

Well it depends on how much your spouse needs to survive. For example, the cost of food, clothes and shelter every month. If your spouse is unemployed then you obviously have to pay spousal support. If your spouse gets a job then you can request to pay less support than usual or no support at all.

Spousal support is determined on a case by case and state by state basis. Some states require that the couple be married for at least 5 years before spousal support can even be considered. Others require that proof be submitted that one spouse's financial survival is dependent upon the other one.
