How do you get your rights back after being a convicted felon?

Everyone has the right to petition the relevant court in their jurisdiction to clear or expunge previous felony convictions; if granted, this entitles the petitioner to reinstatement of the usual rights of citizenship.

There is no "after being a felon." Even though a felon may have made restitution or done the time, s/he is always a felon. Depending on the circumstances, s/he may be able to petition the governor for a pardon, but such cases are rare and require political influence.

The best thing you can do is wait until the required amount of time passes after your conviction that your state allows to have the record sealed.
