A cyst is caused by infection and growth underneath the skin. A cyst can be treated by a sterile cut (by a medical provider) into the cyst and draining the infection inside, should be kept covered with sterile dressing until it is closed and healed. Also you may have to take an antibiotic to ensure the infection resolves.

I have been told that often cysts will go away if you just leave them alone. Mine never did. I have had a number of cysts on my scalp that appear seemingly out of nowhere and grow slowly. I was given a referral to a surgeon who removed them in his office with a local anesthetic and a few stitches.
