It is possibly an ulcer. These can be caused by stress, hormones, and trauma. Things in the mouth heal fairly quickly but warm salty mouthwashes can help. Is it producing pus and near a tooth? You may then have an abscess. An abscess is an infection and won't be relieved until the source is treated.

Sounds like a canker sore. The quickest way is to put salt on the opening 3-4 times/day. This will burn, but it is killing the bacteria. Also, there is medicine called Kank-aid which is OTC that puts a protective coating over the wound to prevent bacteria from affecting it, especially right before bed.

In order to get rid of a sore in your mouth, you should gargle with peroxide. Peroxide will heal your mouth without stinging it in the same manner that alcohol will. Peroxide not only heals your mouth, but it also protects against infection and helps to properly seal the wound on the inside of your mouth.
