Once your divorce is final, you should be sent divorce papers. If the court or a lawyer didn't send these to you, you should be suspicious. Demand the contact information for his lawyer so you can get a copy of the papers. If he won't provide it, do an online search of the courts in your state.

In order to be divorced, there are papers that BOTH of you need to sign. Did you sign anything? If not, I highly, highly doubt you are divorced.

You should have been notified by the court of the finalization of the divorce. Even when there is a mediation or other form of termination a court will typically certify the final decree of divorce. Some locations will also issue a certificate for proof of the divorce like they would a marriage license.

In order to verify your divorce, you will need to contact the County Clerk's office in your area. You may be able to search court proceedings online, or you may have to visit in person. This office maintains all legal records.
