Question by  Angelo (9)

How do you detect damage in a Porche 911 unibody?

I am in the process of purchasing a used Porche and want to make sure there has been no damage to the unibody.

Take it down to a reputable collision repair shop and have them put it on a laser table. These use lasers and markers mounted under the car to compare the vehicles measurements to factory dimension. This will show even slight damage.

Make sure that the unibody doesn't have any bends in it other than crush points. Make sure that it still has original paint on it and not a more vibrant color to the unibody if it is painted. it is very difficult to see and i would ask a mechanic to look at it before you purchase it.

Start with the paint. It is questionable if Porche is already repainted. Find dents underneath. See alignment. See if there's no welding on the body.

Look underneath about center form of the car- when they are rebuilt they clamp the whole car on a machine- the machine will leave clamp marks on the undercarriage.

You should thoroughly inspect the underside of the car. Look for wrinkle or damaged metal or heavy undercoating. Also have a collision shop verify the chassis measurements are right.

The best option is to take it to an unrelated garage and have a professional look at it on a hoist; looking for unusual welds, folds or mis-matched paint.

Stand in front of the car, exactly in the middle, if you see the car go sideways just a little, the car has been totaled before. If not, check for tiny imperfections on the body with your fingertips. Check for rust underneath too.

the way to detect damage in the unibody is to look for cracks and bends in the frame rails and supports.
