How do you defrag a Mac?

My dad's computer is running slow.

Macs don't have a defrag function like PCs do. Instead, run your periodic scripts (sudo periodic daily, sudo periodic weekly, sudo periodic monthly) from the terminal. Also, you may want to check your disk permissions using the disk check utility. If this does not solve the speed issue, you are better off installing your OS X again.

There is an application called Drive Genius which allows you to defrag a Mac hard drive. Another popular tool is iDefrag.
