I would heat up the iron and run it over a towel to try to get the gunk out, then use an iron cleaning paste to clean the surface.

It really just depends on what the melted object is. In most cases, a razor blade will take care of it without hurting your iron.

Clean the heated surface of an iron use a light grit scouring pad. Be very careful not to scrape the surface of the iron. Be sure that the iron is cool before cleaning, so you do not burn yourself. Also, run vinegar through the iron to clean out the steam holes. The will ensure that they do not get clogged.

You clean a heated iron surface with a wet rag. You must make quick and decisive movements and use a padded enough rag so that you will not get burned.

I clean my iron and anything sticky on it using a scouring pad with plain water. Let the iron get warm, use the scouring pad and scrub and then wipe off with plain water.
