You need to consider the breed type because some dogs get along better with small children than others. Do you have a yard where the kids and a larger dog can safely play?

Always look into breeds, Dogs 101 on Animal Planet is a good start. Then you need to look at the activity level of your family and find the right dog to fit in. The last thing you want is a hyperactive dog cause there isn't enough time to exercise them.
