The only way to be able to check your thermostat is to make sure the car is not over heating. If it is you should replace the thermostat and it should stay cooled down. The only way you can check your thermostat is to put it in boiling water and it should pop open.

You can use some type of thermometer to measure the engines temp if you know what temperature the thermostat should open. Warm the engine up and see if it opens. You can tell because both coolant hoses and the radiator will be warm. That means coolant is flowing through the radiator and back to the engine.
