How do you build an outdoor nativity scene?

My church wants to do it for the first time this year.

Decide on the size, then decide whether the scene will be life-like or abstract. Next choose materials -- paper mache is good for three-D, plywood or styrofoam is good for flat or silhouette figures and a shelter (barn). Large styrofoam is available in the home insulation department of large hardware stores. Cur out or make the figures and barn; paint.

Go to your local handyman store, pick up sheets of ply-wood. Trace outlines of all the characters in sharpie marker onto the plywood. Use a jigsaw to cut out the outlines you created. Have members of your church paint the woods to look like the characters. Attatch to stakes.

You can create a simple background with a flat wooden stand, then use a sawhorse as a manger. Provide costumes, have everyone set up with a few bales of hay, and there you are.
