Staying up on the current trends is essential so magazines and blogs are great. You can go to great websites like linkedin.com and meet up with other people in the industry. Start a fashion blog. Become friends with someone you admire in the industry. Volunteer your creative services to someone you admire, photographer, model, makeup artist, whomever.

To have success in the fashion system is a matter of talent and luck : you should be in the right place, in the right moment and with the right attitude. You should be brilliant in interpreting what women want to wear, at the same time suggesting new trends with creativity.

Contact companies and offer to do work experience for them for free. It shows you're willing and committed and helps you get vital experience. The more experience you have the better. Tailor your CV to the industry and apply for absolutely any job you see going. Once you have a foot in the door you can work your way up.

It is very competitive so not many people have a chance. The best way to help your chances are to make sure you go to a reputable fashion school and network while you are there.

I would recommend going to a school that specializes in fashion merchandizing and always be networking. A lot of jobs in the market come from who you know, so keep connections and start a portfolio of contacts that could help you later in your career.

It is extremely competitive. Best bet is to get an internship or start at the bottom and work your way up.
