Remanufactured engines are torn down to nothing but a bare block. Every part of the motor is taken out and replaced with new parts. The crank shaft is what is inside the block and new cylinder heads are used. That is basically all a remanufactured motor is.

Engines are stripped down to their basic parts and boiled or sandblasted to clean them up. Then they're tested for cracks and leaks before the block is honed, the heads are straightened and reassembly starts with piston rings, crankshaft, camshaft and heads for a "short block" rebuild.
