The diameter of the polyp can be estimated on an air contrast barium enema Xray or CT scan. It can also be directly observed and measured on colonoscopy and in many cases the polyp can then be snared off and removed from the body for direct measurement and sent to a pathologist for microscopic tissue examination and diagnosis.

GastroEnterologists look for these growths when looking at the inside the colon. A majority of the time, these anomolies are benign. Measured in centimeters. One centimeter equals 0.393700 or approximately 1/3 of an inch. The pathologist will check for signs of malignancy. After examination of the specimen, the report will be sent to the ordering physician.

Doctors can measure a polyp using the camera they insert into a patient's rectum. They know the magnification settings of the camera, so they can use these to create an accurate measurement of the polyp on the screen. The shape and location of a polyp can also be an indicator as to how much danger it poses in the colon.

They can be seen during colonoscopy and the largest diameter estimated by comparing it to the size of the biopsy instrument being used to take a tissue sample from it or the polyp can be totally removed by snaring it and the size measured after removal.Air contrast barium enema and CTscan can also be used to detect and measure them.

A medical device called an endoscope is required. This device is a thin, flexible tube that has a camera on the tip and is inserted into the colon.
