Synthetic sponges can be made out of many types of material, either from cellulose wood fibres foamed to form a sponge, or by similar action with polyether, polyester and PVA, these are made by bubbling or foaming an emulsion of the synthetic material whilst evaporating the solvent off to leave the sponge structure. The emulsion is likely sprayed to aerate.

Synthetic sponges are made of foamed plastic polymers or cellulose, polyurethane or polyester.Temperature changes and additives used during processing allow gas or air pockets to form before the materials cure into solid sheets.
