Night vision binoculars use the power or infrared light and image enhancers to allow you to see at night. The do run on some type of battery. This is to power the image enhancer that take the low light image and multiply it so you can see it easily.

night vision binoculars work by capturing parts of the infered light spectrum, which are emited by heat, such as a persons body heat. Yes they require batteries.
