When drafting a business plan, first start with a broad central theme - what type of accounting: personal, corporate, forensic, nonprofit? Then identify your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats as a business. This is known as a SWOT analysis. Look at the big picture of the industry and then the narrow niche your business will fill.

All business plans have essentially the same elements, which are then tailored for the specific business. You'll find business plan templates on line, and a number of software programs that are free or for purchase. You will address the basics of the business, including budgets, personnel, etc.

Determine overhead: employees, space, equipment, taxes, salaries, benefits, advertising, insurance. Determine the hourly rate and number of clients needed to meet the overhead. Research the cost of office space and equipment. How many employees at what professional level? Is any one bringing clients along? What assets are on hand? Who are the principals with what licensing?

You can hire a consultant whom can help with this position for you. Many people hire a person that has opened a business or two on their own to help in putting together the proper business plan. With this person in hand you can put together a great business plan.

Pitch your ideas in a well constructed linear time line that shows your ideas. Make sure to showcase anything that your business can offer than similar businesses won't be able to offer. Point out how you aim to improve upon issues current similar businesses in the area face. Have someone proofread your plan for you and take criticism constructively.

If you have never written a business plan there are many good resources online to give you the basic structure. Your most important components should illustrate cash flow projections as well as your operating budget and plans for growth.
