The best way is to remove the felt carefully and soak it for a few minutes in cold water with a small amount of detergent. Remove it from the solution, knead excess water from the fabric, and let it dry on towels before replacing.

Vacuum the cloth with a small hand vacuum. Use a clean damp cloth and blot the area a few times. Do not rub the felt because this will loosen the nap. Too much water could stretch the cloth or loosen the glue on the back that adheres it to the slate.
