It really depends on the smell. An acrid, electrical smell might mean that the motor or capacitor is going bad. A sour, pungent smell might mean that a return is pulling in sewer vent. A musty, old or rotten smell may mean that there is mold or fungus growing in the duct work. Contact a contractor to investigate.
