The quickest, easiest way is by covering the bread with a lightly dampened paper towel and microwaving for a short amount of time. The amount of time will vary based on how much bread is being softened and the power of the microwave. Do the microwaving right before you serve the bread as it will reharden quickly.

You could put it in a hot oven for a few minutes or even in the microwave for about 30 seconds. I find that bread is softer when the microwave is used. If it's sliced bread you could have toast instead!

Stale bread can be softened by moistening the crust slightly and wrapping in foil, then heating in the over at around 300 degrees for 15 minutes.
