You first need to buy the equipment needed for the specific aquarium you have. You start with setting up the stand. You shouldn't use soap when cleaning it. You should wash the gravel and rocks and plants. Then you add the water and set up the equipment such as the heater, but don't plug in the thermostat.

Use a 20-50 gallon tank and make sure it's the "breeder" type. Place it out of direct sunlight. Create spaces in the tank where the turtle can be on land (like large rocks or bricks) and water areas. Fit a proper basking light from outside the tank. Water level should be deeper than the length of the turtles body.

Turtles need to be able to easily exit the aquarium water to dry off and bask under a UVA/UVB reptile lamp. Turtles need plenty of swimming area and walking area. Add large smooth river rocks into the tank, then fill with dechlorinated water and setup heat lamps and filters.

For our little guy, we have a 10-gallon tank, one bag of large-stone gravel, water treatment solution, a fake plant, a filter, and a plastic basking bridge. We have a screen on top of the tank, along with a UV and a standard light. We use 4 gallons of distilled water and create "hills and valleys" in the gravel.

You will need a water pump that will filter out the feces, line bottom with rocks too big for the turtle to eat and a dry sunny place for sunbathing.

You need to ensure that there is plenty of room for the turtle to swim around without any obstacles. You also need to provide a space out of the water usually on a rock for the turtle to sun bathe.Ensure you include a UV light as turtles need the heat and the UV to keep their shell hard and healthy.
