To repair the copper pipe, disconnect the water and clear the pipe. Use a pipe cutter to remove the damaged section. Cut a replacement section out of a new piece of pipe and connect it to the existing pipe by sweating and soldering a pipe connector to each end of the patch section.

If the pipe is split lengthwise, the best solution is to cut out the section that is bad and solder in a new section. You will need a length of the same size pipe, two couplings, and soldering equipment.
