Wire gauge refers to the size of the wire or how much current it can handle. The lower the gauge the bigger the wire and more current it can handle.

There are many different ways to figure out the gauge or size of a wire. Many times it is written on the outside jacket of the wire. You can also use your strippers to figure out what gauge you are using. 14 wire is a little smaller than 12 wire.
