You will to see the vaginal area appear swollen. There will be a slight pinkish discharge in the beginning and after a day or so, the discharge will be red.

The most obvious symptom is bleeding from the vagina. Don't expect it to be as much as a human's cycle. All watch for a swollen vulva and increased urination.

When your Labrador starts to show signs of swelling at the vulva coupled with bloody or clear discharge, she is going through Proestrus and Estrus, or being "in heat".

You will know a dog is coming into heat when she starts acting a bit differently and her vulva starts to swell. At this point you need to start worrying about keeping males away from her. The tell-tale sign though is when she starts bleeding from her vulva.
