How do I know if my dog has separation anxiety or bad behavior?

If your dog has separation anxiety you will probably be able to tell even if no one is home with the dog. Your dog may Pee or Poop on the floor or do something like chew up the furniture or something he shouldn't. If your dog does this it's best to kennel the dog while you're not home.

If your dog has bad behavior, you will know it. Separation anxiety means that your dog could be whining and barking excessively when you leave him alone. Simple bad behavior includes things like going to the bathroom inside the house, ripping up pillows, scratching furniture, and otherwise disrespecting your household.

When a dog has separation anxiety, he becomes anxious when his owner leaves the house or even leaves the room. He displays this anxiety by pacing, whining, barking or destroying things in the house.

Does your dog greet you excessively when you return home? Does he dog your steps? Does he cry when you are leaving? Does he urinate or have bowel movements inside. Does he scratch at your windows or doors when you are not home? Does he destroy items when you are not there? If so, he may may have separation anxiety.

This isn't a real problem. Dogs aren't people. You control the dog's behavior. Separation anxiety applies to toddlers, not dogs. Be diligent with your training, and you have no issues.

Signs of an upset dog include coming home to find household items scratched or chewed instead of his dog toys. Drooling in a crate is also a sign.
