How do I know if my dog has a fever?

Generally canine temperatures are taking rectally. You can roughly check my placing your hand on the dogs belly next to the skin. The skin should feel warm but not hot as they do run a little warmer then we humans. If the dog seems to be burning up you can give them infants Tylenol until you can see a vet.

A dog's temp is 101-102. 5F and you can take an anal temp with a thermometer. Usually if a dog has a fever, he is listless, and you can feel a hot body temp, he will not eat, and may pant excessively, that is how they lower their body temp.

You can take your dogs temperature with a thermometer, preferably an electronic one. Dip the thermometer in some lubricant such as Vaseline and measure through the anus. Resting temperature between 100 up to 102 is normal. Anything higher than 102 is considered fever.

Although a thermometer is the best indicator of a dog's temperature, you can also tell by touching the ears and neck area. If this area is warm and the dog's nose is dry, definitely check the dog's temperature rectally. The temperature should be around 100 degrees normally.

If the dog feels fever warm to the touch then you need to call the vet and find out what a normal temperature is fir the dog and take a rectal thermometer and take the temperature that way you will know for sure if it is a fever.
