Dig up the rhizomes just about any time of year. Just remember they do the best if planted in full sun. They like about any soil and also tolerate drought.

Day lilies should be separated after the blooming season. In the fall, dig up the rhizomes(some refer to these as bulbs.) Usually, they are fairly easy to separate. You can either replant them, or store them in a dry, dark, cool place, until you replant them in the spring.

Plant should be at least three years old. Dig up carefully and make a clean, fast slice through middle of plant. Replant each part, making hole twice the size of plant roots. Water thoroughly.

Daylilies should be split approximately once every three to four years. First remove plant from soil and clean the root by washing with water. Split root into three or four equal sized sections. Plant each of them in soil firmly. Water the plants throughly.

Its really easy - just dig the plant up and pull the roots apart with a garden fork. Standard daylilies are forgiving and usually can be aggressively divided.
