Adult budgerigars, commonly referred to as parakeets, can be sexed by observing the color of their cere, the fleshy area on the upper part of the beak that houses the bird's nostrils. A male budgie has a smooth blue cere, while a female budgie's cere is often more scaly, and either brown or white.

In most parakeet species, the male has a crown that will appear either yellow or brown in color. The crown of female parakeets will be either blue or purple, depending on the species. The crown is the part of the beak where the nostrils are located, just above the actual beak.

Look just above the bird's beak (the "nose"). Males have it dark blue, while in females it's usually light blue or tan. Very young birds always have it purple though.
