Cleaning a chimney requires specialist tools, so you would be best of hiring a profesional chimney sweep to do the job for you once a year.

There is a special brush that you can purchase at hardware stores that you can use to scrape the soot off of the sides of the chimney if its not too bad. Other then that you should have a company that specializes in chimney cleaning and have this done once a year.

Hire a chimney sweep. Otherwise, buy a chimney brush and pole and climb on the roof and start there. Take the cap off and run the brush up and down.
