I would recommend purchasing "fundamental refrigeration" from Amazon. This book explains how to take temperatures to determine if an air conditioner is working correctly without attaching gauges.

Unless you are a professional with the right equipment the only way to determine your freon levels is by how your air conditioner is running. If it feels cool then the level are probably fine but if it begins to feel warm they could be low. Low freon is caused by a leak and should be inspected.
