Use a hole saw for a small hole. For a bigger hole you will nee to make it and cut it out with a reciprocating saw.

there are all kinds of tool for different size holes, and different tools for thick wood and thin wood. the most basic would be a drill, that will make you a starter hole and then you can go from there
