How do I create butt joints for crown molding?

I am installing my own crown molding in my family room and am having a hard time with the joints.

This problem can be solved by investing a few dollars in a miter box or a few more dollars in a miter saw. This will help with angles and cuts.

If the crown is going to be painted then butt joints are probably OK. What you do is use a miter saw and box to make clean and square cuts in the molding and then join them and caulk/putty the seam.

If you are wanting to create these types of crown moldings then you will need first a hammer and a concealer.
